The Regular Theatre presents GRUESOME PLAYGROUND INJURIES
The Regular Theatre is proud to close its first full-length season with Rajiv Joseph's Gruesome Playground Injuries, for one weekend only August 30th-September 1st. The production is directed by Kyle Parker Daniels, stage managed by Hannah Sgambellone, and features original costume design from Wyatt Kim. It is produced by Ellie Conniff, Sam Martini, Hannah Sgambellone, Kyle Daniels, and Micah Price.
Gruesome Playground Injuries is a surreal, anecdotal two-hander that explores the tumultuous relationship between two childhood best friends, Doug and Kayleen. Through a non-linear timeline, Joesph explores life, loss, and codependence as the characters discover, lose, and rediscover each other over the span of thirty years. "[The play] is about the things from our childhood, and the impact they leave on us thirty years later - our injuries, our loves, our tears", states director Kyle Parker Daniels. This is his Regular Theatre directorial debut, though he has been a longtime producer with the company. "Gruesome Playground Injuries makes us aware of our history" he explains, "it shows us how something minor from fifteen years ago can be the key to everything now".
"There's a lot of timeliness in the script", states Mandy Goodwin, who plays Kayleen. Her first production with Regular Theatre, Mandy is a graduate from the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York City and describes Kayleen as one of her dream roles. "It's about the awareness of each others experiences", she states. "How we perceive each other, you can see the layers and similarities in the scars that we might have. It's two very different experiences of pain."
Gruesome's other star agrees. "The play allows the audience to have the same remembrances of innocence that the characters do", says Micah Price, who plays Doug. This is Micah's fourth Regular Theatre performance this season, after his directorial debut with No Exit earlier in December.
The production is approximately an hour and fifteen minutes, with no intermission. Tickets can be purchased at regulartheatre.com/shows.
